LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Don Drysdale's 1963 World Series championship ring with the sold for $110,111 in an auction of the late Hall of Fame pitcher's memorabilia.
The Dodgers came out of the box with a bang as ace pitcher Sandy Koufax mowed down the Yanks in Game 1 and struck out the first five batters to start the game. Koufax broke Carl Erskine’s 1953 record when he K’d Maris. In total, Koufax fanned 15 batters striking out Mickey Mantle, Tresh and Tony Kubek twice each and Bobby Richardson three times as Los Angeles won 5-2. The 1955 World Series MVP, Johnny Podres then put the Dodgers up 2-0 as he won Game 2 by a score of 4-1 over Al Downing. Game 3 pitted 1962 Cy Young winner Don Drysdale against 21-game winner Jim Bouton, but it was much of the same for the Yankees as Drysdale threw a three-hit 1-0 shutout with nine strikeouts. On the verge of being swept in a World Series for the fist time, New York went back to their ace Whitey Ford for a rematch of Game 1 against Sandy Koufax. Los Angeles took the lead in the fifth inning on a home run by Frank Howard, but Mickey Mantle tied it with one swing as he went deep in the top of the seventh. However, in the bottom half of the frame, when Jim Gilliam hit a shot down the third base line that Clete Boyer had to leap for, Joe Pepitone lost Clete Boyer’s throw from third to first in the crowd and misplayed the ball allowing Gilliam to get all the way to third base on a two-base error. Willie Davis’ sac-fly brought in Gilliam for the 2-1 lead and Sandy Koufax shut the door. Sandy had three of his eight strikeouts in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the Yankees in a four-game sweep for the first time in the history of the franchise. The Bronx Bombers were held to the second lowest number of runs in World Series history with 4 – only the 1905 Philadelphia Athletics scored fewer (3). Koufax had two complete game victories and struck out 23 batters in 18 innings to earn the 1963 World Series MVP Award.
