1968, August 23-29: Chicago Democratic National Convention protests and police riots. Antiwar demonstrators square off against Chicago police who attempt to block them from reaching the convention site on Michigan Avenue. 589 are arrested, with injuries to 100 protesters and 119 police. The conflict is broadcast live as demonstrators chant, "The whole world is watching."
