1968, August 23-29: Chicago Democratic National Convention protests and police riots. Antiwar demonstrators square off against Chicago police who attempt to block them from reaching the convention site on Michigan Avenue. 589 are arrested, with injuries to 100 protesters and 119 police. The conflict is broadcast live as demonstrators chant, "The whole world is watching."

Jerry Rubin Social Activist. Co-founder of the Yippie Party and one of the Chicago Seven protesters of the Vietnam War that were tried for inciting a riot during the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention.
