''There are lots of secondhand bookdealers out there, but you can't see them,'' said Shirley Solomon, who represents the second generation to run the Pageant Book and Print Shop, which left Fourth Avenue in 1978 and is now at 114 West Houston Street. ''They work out of offices, the World Wide Web, mail order and by appointment only. A few have opened on 18th Street off Fifth Avenue.''
After the deaths of Mr. Chafetz and Mr. Solomon, Pageant continued under the ownership of Sid’s daughter Shirley Solomon. The gentrification of Fourth Avenue in the 1990’s forced nearly all of the remaining bookshops to re-locate or close. At that time, the shop moved to West Houston Street and in the summer of 1999, Pageant Books and Prints Shop closed its physical shop and went virtual. Shirley has now been joined by her sister, Rebecca Solomon who was also raised “in the business”.
