Participants will enjoy a reading of the children's book The Sugaring Off Party by Jonathan London, which describes a French-Canadian family's traditional sugaring-off celebration, including dancing, feasting, and syrup on snow. Then step into the book and kick up your heels as fiddlers Gretchen Koehler and Joel Foisy recreate a typical Quebecois house party. They will teach traditional French folk dances and songs and share the secret to playing the spoons.
Led by fiddler Gretchen Koehler, the group assembled at TAUNY heard a story, “The Sugaring-Off Party” by Jonathan London, in which a French-Canadian grandmother reminisces about her first sugaring-off party in Quebec when the calendar flipped to March. She recounts the trip to the sugar shack to boil down maple syrup, the rich meal that awaited them inside the house and the sugaring off party that was part of the celebration, when the music and dancing went into high gear.
